What is IGES?

IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification) is one of the earliest vendor-neutral CAD data exchange formats, first published in 1980 as ANSI standard Y14.26M. Developed through collaboration between Boeing, General Electric, and the US National Bureau of Standards, IGES was created to enable transfer of 2D and 3D design data between incompatible CAD systems.

IGES files can represent a variety of geometric entities including points, lines, arcs, NURBS curves and surfaces, solid models, and annotation data like dimensions and text. The format uses an ASCII text structure organized into five sections: Start, Global, Directory Entry, Parameter Data, and Terminate, which makes files human-readable but often very large.

While STEP has largely replaced IGES for new CAD data exchange workflows, IGES remains important for legacy compatibility. Many older CAD files and supplier design libraries are stored in IGES format, and most current CAD software continues to support IGES import for backward compatibility. Aerospace and defense industries maintain large archives of IGES data from decades of engineering work.

IGES Viewer FAQ

IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification) is a legacy CAD interchange format first published in 1980. It stores 2D and 3D geometric data including NURBS curves, surfaces, and solid models for transfer between CAD systems.
IGES is considered a legacy format, largely replaced by STEP for new data exchange. However, it remains relevant for accessing older CAD archives and maintaining backward compatibility with legacy systems.
Both are vendor-neutral CAD formats. STEP (ISO 10303) is newer, supports richer data including assemblies and PMI, and uses a more compact structure. IGES is older with broader legacy tool support but less capable data representation.
Yes. Most CAD software including FreeCAD, Fusion 360, and SolidWorks can open IGES files and export them as STEP. Online conversion tools are also available.
IGES uses an ASCII text format where each geometric entity is described in a verbose, fixed-column text structure. This makes files human-readable but significantly larger than binary formats like STEP or STL.
