What is 3MF?

3MF (3D Manufacturing Format) is a modern 3D printing file format developed by the 3MF Consortium, which includes Microsoft, Autodesk, HP, Stratasys, and other industry leaders. Designed specifically to address the limitations of STL, 3MF packages geometry, color, texture, material, and metadata into a single compressed ZIP-based archive.

Unlike STL, which stores only bare triangulated geometry, 3MF supports per-vertex and per-triangle colors, texture mapping, multiple materials, and print-specific metadata such as build orientation and support structures. This makes it ideal for modern multi-color and multi-material 3D printers.

The 3MF format uses an XML-based internal structure wrapped in a standard ZIP container, making files compact and efficient. Leading slicers including PrusaSlicer, Cura, and Bambu Studio natively support 3MF, and the format is increasingly becoming the recommended alternative to STL for all 3D printing workflows.

3MF Viewer FAQ

3MF (3D Manufacturing Format) is a modern 3D printing format that packages geometry, color, textures, materials, and metadata into a single compressed file. It was created by the 3MF Consortium to replace STL for richer printing workflows.
For most use cases, yes. 3MF supports color, textures, and multiple materials while STL only stores geometry. 3MF files are also smaller due to compression and include print-specific metadata.
Most modern slicers including PrusaSlicer, Cura, Bambu Studio, and Simplify3D support 3MF natively. Check your slicer documentation for specific version requirements.
Yes. Our viewer extracts and renders color data, textures, and material assignments embedded in 3MF files for an accurate visual preview.
Yes. You can convert 3MF files to STL format using our conversion tools or dedicated software. Note that color and material data will be lost in the conversion since STL only supports geometry.
