What is DAE?

DAE is the file extension for COLLADA (COLLAborative Design Activity), an open XML-based interchange format managed by the Khronos Group. COLLADA was designed to serve as a universal exchange format between different 3D authoring tools, enabling seamless asset transfer across the content creation pipeline.

COLLADA files can store a comprehensive set of 3D data including geometry, materials, textures, shaders, animations, physics properties, and scene hierarchies. The XML structure makes DAE files human-readable and easy to process programmatically, though it also results in larger file sizes compared to binary formats.

While COLLADA was once the primary interchange format for the 3D industry, it has been largely superseded by glTF for real-time applications. However, DAE remains relevant in game engines like Google SketchUp, some game development pipelines, and archival workflows where its comprehensive data storage and open specification are valued.

How to View DAE Files Online

DAE Viewer FAQ

DAE is the file extension for COLLADA, an open XML-based 3D interchange format managed by the Khronos Group. It stores geometry, materials, textures, animations, and scene data for transfer between 3D applications.
While glTF has replaced COLLADA for many real-time web applications, DAE remains used in SketchUp workflows, some game engines, and archival pipelines. It is also still supported by most major 3D tools.
Yes. Our viewer supports playback of keyframe and skeletal animations stored in DAE files. Complex shader effects may be approximated using standard WebGL rendering.
Both are Khronos Group formats. DAE uses verbose XML and supports legacy shading models, while glTF uses compact binary data and PBR materials. glTF is optimized for fast loading in web and real-time applications.
Yes. DAE files can be converted to glTF, OBJ, FBX, or STL using Blender, Assimp, or our online conversion tools.
