STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product Data) is an ISO 10303 standard format for representing and exchanging 3D CAD data. As a vendor-neutral format, STEP enables interoperability between different CAD systems such as SolidWorks, CATIA, NX, Creo, and Fusion 360 without losing geometric accuracy or design intent.
Unlike mesh-based formats like STL, STEP files store exact boundary representation (B-Rep) geometry using NURBS curves and surfaces. This means STEP models maintain mathematically precise shapes that can be edited and manufactured with exact dimensional accuracy. The format also supports assembly structures, geometric tolerances, and product manufacturing information (PMI).
STEP is the most widely adopted neutral CAD format in aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing industries. It is mandated by many government procurement standards and serves as the archival format for long-term product data storage. The AP203 and AP214 application protocols are the most commonly used variants for mechanical CAD data exchange.
